THE OPENING OF YOUR PRESENTATION CAN BE THE MOST FRAUGHT PART. GET IT RIGHT THOUGH, AND YOUR IMPACT CAN BE ENHANCED CONSIDERABLY.

In general, give an opening before you introduce yourself. It takes more courage, but has more effect.

Using humour is always risky, but careful use in an introduction can really set the atmosphere for you to perform well throughout the presentation. You ‘break the ice’ and the audience then want you to succeed.

Here are a few amusing introductions you could try:

  • Travelling is always fraught isn’t it? My journey was long this morning and gave me loads of time to get really nervous. Hello, my name is [name]
  • I don’t know if you have read the news lately but there are a lot of crises about. I am here to add to the list. Hello, my name is [name]
  • I once travelled through France, stopping at various vineyards for a taste of the local produce. How I wish I was there now. Hello, my name is [name]
  • People are funny aren’t they? I saw a lot of people smiling on the way to the presentation. It struck me that what they had in common was that they weren’t coming to listen to me. Hello, my name is [name]
  • Imagine this is the last presentation you will ever go to, and you are absolutely determined to remember every single word. Keep that imagination going for the next 20 minutes will you? Hello, my name is [name]
