In general, give an opening before you introduce yourself. It takes more courage, but has more effect.

Using humour is always risky, but careful use in an introduction can really set the atmosphere for you to perform well throughout the presentation. You ‘break the ice’ and the audience then want you to succeed.

People are funny aren’t they? I saw a lot of people smiling on the way to the presentation. It struck me that what they had in common was that they weren’t coming to listen to me. Hello, my name is [name]

Imagine this is the last presentation you will ever go to, and you are absolutely determined to remember every single word. Keep that imagination going for the next 20 minutes will you? Hello, my name is [name]
