ARE MEETINGS REALLY PRODUCTIVE ... ?

Meetings are a pain. Then again perhaps they are a comfort. Especially where birthdays, cakes and chats about England’s poor rugby performance are concerned. They are even more fun when we can use the time to postulate, defend, argue and delay.

Not that this happens in your meetings of course ! But in case it does here are some tips for making meetings do what they are supposed to do: work !

Frustrated at lack of progress in meetings? Here are some tips which may help:

  • From the outset focus people’ s minds by announcing that the time available is less than advertised.
  • Agree that each person will have limited time, plus time to be questioned.
  • Agree the level of detail that this meeting is dealing with. A lower level of detail is for another meeting
  • Keep using the question: ‘what do you recommend that we do?’.
  • When conversation between 2 or 3 other parties takes a diversion or goes into depth, suggest that they take it to another meeting.
  • Ask which topics on the agenda would best be achieved at an alternative meeting
