The Resilience Revolution: Thriving in Times of Adversity

Has it ever felt harder to be a leader? Many of us are overwhelmed by competing priorities and a lack of time. I see many leaders doing their best to lead their team but so often they get tripped up by the same frailties, leaving them exhausted and stressed.

81,396 hours. That’s how much of life most of us spend working. The only thing we spend more time doing is sleeping. If we spend so much of life at work, how is life at work going? Gallup recently reported, 60% of people are emotionally detached at work and 19% are miserable. To help you become an agile leader, cultivating your resilience is paramount to your personal effectiveness, according to McKinsey’s 20 year research on top CEO’s.

Three years on, the COVID-19 pandemic created a global crisis for mental health, fuelling short and long-term stresses and undermining the mental health of millions.

Research by Deloitte indicated that poor mental health costs UK employers up to £45 billion annually. Yet are these statistics really any surprise at all? – look at the way we sit all day long, hunched over our laptops not to mention the constant addiction to our mobile phones. The way we eat, with 1 in 4 people suffering from Diabetes, Asthma, Heart Related conditions, and Cancer are all on the rise, not to mention poor quality sleep are of which are contributing to this health epidemic. A range of lifestyle & environmental factors is conspiring us to make us sick.

So how can organisations address these challenges? The latest Deloitte Research highlights:
-Workplace wellbeing is on the decline, but Executives do not recognise this. Managers lack support & ask what will it take to move the needle? Whilst it is the responsibility for companies to consider creating an environment for employees to thrive, I believe that empowering individuals to take accountability in creating daily habits plays a pivotal role in embedding a strengths-based culture to increase productivity, boost employee morale and create sustainability.
